everybody's rushin' onto an adventure: Sonic Rush Adventure (Nintendo DS, 2005) Review

NOTE: This review is part of a retrospective of the Sonic franchise. Feel free to read the other Sonic reviews I’ve done here - https://expithecat.blogspot.com/search/label/sonic%20retrospective I couldn’t think of a better title. Anyway, time to review Socialist Rifle Association- I mean, Sonic Rush Adventure. Background and History I couldn’t really find much information on this game’s development, but with the release of the original Rush receiving good reviews from both critics and Sonic fans alike, and with the DS still doing extremely well, it isn’t too much of a surprise that Sonic Rush would see a sequel.  Like the first Rush game, Sonic Rush Adventure was handled by Dimps with assistance from Sonic Team. The game’s director, Sakae Osumi, took inspiration from adventure-themed media and chose to theme the game’s sequel around pirates and the seas.  The game was announced in April 2007 and released in September of the same year for most countries but October of t...

Harry Po- er, Sonic and the Secret Rings (Wii, 2007) Review

NOTE: This review is part of a retrospective of the Sonic franchise. Feel free to read the other Sonic reviews I’ve done here - https://expithecat.blogspot.com/search/label/sonic%20retrospective Well, I’m finally done with 06, hopefully the next game will be b- god damn it. Background and History I first want to mention that in my 06 review, I stated that the development team had been split to allocate more people to Secret Rings. Well, turns out that wasn’t entirely true, and while a version of 06 for the Wii had been planned, ultimately it was decided that it would take too long, leading Sonic Team to make a completely original game for the Wii while 06 was in development. Yojiro Ogawa had an idea for a Wii Sonic game in mind - a game where Sonic is continually moving forward, and it was also decided that the game would be themed around ‘Arabian Nights’, kicking off what would be considered the “Storybook” series of Sonic games… that only consisted of two games but whatever. NOTE: This review is part of a retrospective of the Sonic franchise. Feel free to read the other Sonic reviews I’ve done here - https://expithecat.blogspot.com/search/label/sonic%20retrospective Well gang, today I’m reviewing Sonic the Hedgehog. No, not the game released for the Sega Genesis for 1991. Or the game released for the Master System and Game Gear the same year. I’m talking about the game released in 2006, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Probably one of the most infamous games in the franchise, and one that arguably did lasting damage to its overall reputation. This is going to be fun. Background and History Development of Sonic 06 can be traced back to the completion of Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg in 2003 - where Sonic Team was trying to come up with new ideas for their next project, one of which being a more realistic game in tone and a new physics engine. It was decided that the game would be developed and released in 2006 for the next generation of platforms - at ...
